Understanding Ranveer Allahbadia AKA BeerBiceps

YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as BeerBiceps (image-Instagram/beerbiceps).

Ranveer Allahbadia needs no introduction at this point. The YouTuber, more famously known as BeerBiceps, is a popular figure across social media. From his viral clips on his podcast, The Ranveer Allahbadia Show, where both national and international (and oftentimes controversial) figures have dropped by, to the absurd questions he might ask them, Ranveer has proved one thing: Love him or hate him, you simply can’t ignore him.

The influencer made headlines yet again for all the wrong reasons. A complaint has been filed against him after his appearance in comedian Samay Raina’s India’s Got Latent show. His subsequent questions to one of the contestants have not gone down well. Especially among his podcast audience.

Alongside influencers Ashish Chanchlani, Apoorva Mukhija (aka the rebel kid), and Ranveer, he asked one of the contestants, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?”

Several people, including journalist and lyricist Neelesh Misra and Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate, slammed the YouTuber’s “perverse” remarks. Netizens slammed the content creators, specifically Ranveer, for “misusing” his platform.

Now a complaint has been filed with the Mumbai Commissioner and Maharashtra Women’s Commission against Ranveer, Apoorva, Samay and the organisers of the India’s Got Latent for allegedly using abusive language on the show. Following the same, the influencer apologised in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) stating, “I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s got latent. I’m sorry. My comment wasn’t just inappropriate, it was not even funny. Comedy is not my forte, I am just here to say sorry.”

“The podcast is watched by people of all ages, I don’t want to be the kind of person that takes that responsibility lightly and family is the last thing I would ever disrespect,” he said.

A look at the comment sections of some of the recent Instagram posts of Ranveer reveals several fans and followers slamming his remarks and deciding to unfollow him. Among them, what stood out were the fans expressing their disappointment after their “role model” made the controversial remarks.

The Beginning of BeerBiceps

Born on 2 June 1993 in Mumbai, Ranveer began his YouTube career after graduating with an engineering degree. While he started with content related to fitness and cooking, it eventually expanded (so did his audience) to men’s fashion, personal development, mental health, and more. Followers and subscribers grew, and Ranveer had become one of the leading figures in the Indian digital space.

The Ranveer Show

After starting his content creation and talent management agency called Monk Entertainment in 2018, he launched his now infamous “The Ranveer Show” podcast. From there on, there was no looking back. Ranveer Allahbadia started to become a household name. Even among those who never watched his shows, he became popular, for better or worse, thanks to the many snippets of his podcasts and his unique (to say the least) questions and reactions he would often offer his guests.

Kya aapne kabhi Yeti ko dekha hai? (Have you ever seen Yeti?)” and “Aapne kabhi maut ke baare mein socha hai? (Have you ever thought of death?)” are some of the out-of-the-blue questions that the influencer flings at his guests.

Stepping Into Politics

Speaking of guests, from Priyanka Chopra to Foreign Minister Jai Shankar, from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Sadhguru, the YouTuber brought huge names to his podcast. Spotlight was once again on him when a series of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ministers appeared on his podcast: Rajeev Chandrasekhar, S. Jaishankar, Smriti Irani, and Piyush Goyal were just some of the names. The series was “co-presented by MyGov,” a collaboration with the government agency.

“Until then, we had avoided political content, feeling perhaps we weren’t quite prepared for it. However, this presented a good opportunity. Figures such as Dr. S. Jaishankar and Smriti Irani have significant standing both nationally and globally. From a purely opportunistic standpoint, we decided this was a chance worth taking,” said Ranveer, as quoted by Newslaundry in its report.

On March 8, 2024 (shortly before the Lok Sabha elections), Ranveer Allahbadia won the “Disruptor of the Year” award presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself at the first-ever National Creators Award. By then, many people had begun to criticise the influencer for promoting BJP propaganda via his platform.

Defending himself, Ranveer said that there will be more politicians from other parties on his show. His most recent video has former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi.

Among other criticisms, many slammed Ranveer for uploading videos without verifying claims, especially when they are communally charged statements. One such video was by author Sandeep Balakrishna, who claimed that a Malappuram village has a sign stating non-Muslims were discouraged from entering and only Islamic law applied in the area. Netizens criticised him for posting such videos when he had the team and the resources to simply do a fact-check.

The influencer has grown in a relatively short span of time to become one of the most recognised faces. While his podcast followers enjoy the lessons on spirituality, meditation, and other things, the recent debacle by Ranveer has made many fans question their “role model” and the content he peddles, which has largely become his image. With the controversial and “vulgar” remarks at the roast in the spotlight, Ranveer’s fans have turned against him, with many questioning his supposed ‘spiritual’ image and what his platform stands for.
