India 'Opens' To Take Back Citizens Residing Illegally In US: S Jaishankar

India is prepared to take back Indian citizens residing illegally in the United States, foreign minister Subramanyam Jaishankar said after the meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington.

Trump issued executive orders this week to clamp down on illegal immigration and expedite his goal of deporting millions of immigrants.

Jaishankar said that New Delhi was open to taking back undocumented Indians and was in the process of verifying those in the United States who could be deported to India. “We are very firmly opposed to illegal mobility and illegal migration”, said he.

India has always taken the view of bringing its citizens living illegally in every country not only in the US and has been open to their legitimate return to India.

Reportedly, some 18,000 Indians have been identified for deportation, who are living illegally or without proper documentation in the US.

Trump administration is committed to restrict immigration in the US and to deport all those living in the country without proper documents. Within hours of taking office, Trump shut down the CBP one app that faciliatated legal entry of immigrants into the US by granting them work eligibility and also abolished birthright citizenship.

Notalby, Marco Rubio after sworn in as the US Secretary of State held his first Quad Ministerial Meeting with India, Japan, and Australia. Rubio met with his counterparts Australia’s Penny Wong, India’s Subramanyam Jaishankar and Japan’s Takeshi Iwaya in Washington. The four parties issued a joint statement and restated their ‘shared commitment to strengthen a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
