Amazon To Replace Over 5 Lakh Human Jobs With Robots: Report

Washington DC, United States: US-based multinational technology company Amazon is all set to replace more than half a million jobs with robots, as the robotics team of the company may soon automate 75 percent of operations, reports the New York Times citing internal documents.

The automation may take place this time with the warehouses, employing the fewest possible humans. According to the report, the e-commerce giant’s automation team expects that the company can avoid hiring more than 1,60,000 people in the United States by 2027.

The team believe that the automation will save the company around 30 cents or Rs 26 on every item Amazon picks, packs and delivers.

A company executive said that the automation would avoid the need to hire over 6 lakh humans by 2033, while still expecting to sell twice as many products. At present, the company has around 1.2 million staff.

Notably, the upcoming automation has also invited backlash from a section of the society, reminding the firm about the corporate social responsibility and commitments. It is reported that the document also mentions that the company indeed uses advanced technology instead of “automation” and “artificial intelligence”, and “cobots” (collaboration of humans and robots) instead of “robots”. Through which, the company prepare a workplace shift which also involves greater participation in community events

However, according to Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel, the company planned to hire 250,000 people for the coming holiday season, the news portal quoted the official.
