Suriya’s upcoming action entertainer, Retro also starring Pooja Hegde, is the current sensation of the Tamil film industry. Ahead of the release of the Karthik Subbaraj directorial, the actor has dropped a caution about his now-famous cigarette-smoking scene in the film.
Suriya has always maintained a no-smoking-scene policy since the beginning of his career. However, the upcoming film Retro became a game changer in his policy, as the trailer portrays the actor smoking in a brief scene.
Jointly produced by Stone Bench Films and Suriya’s 2D Entertainment, the film boasts a stellar cast including Suriya, Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Shreya Saran, and others on board. As the short clip of the actor smoking on screen ignited discussions among fans, Suriya made sure to address the scene and alert his fans.

In a recent promotional event, the actor clarified that he had used cigarettes only for the film and revealed that he doesn’t smoke in real life. Clarifying that he won’t endorse such activities, Suriya also advised his fans, saying, “I have used cigarettes only for the well-being of Retro; don’t smoke in your real life. Even if you start with a single puff, it will never let you go. I will not endorse that.“
“CAUTION: I have used cigarette only for well being of #Retro, don’t smoke in your real life🚬. If you start you like one puff, but it will never let you go & become addictive⚠️. I will not endorse that🤝”

It is not the first time Suriya has broken his personal “no smoking scene” rule for a film. The Kanguva actor broke his personal rule for the first time in 20 years in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s action thriller starring Kamal Haasan, Vikram (2022), while he was portraying the role of the ruthless villain, Rolex.

About the scene, Suriya also said that for the last 20 years he never smoked on screen and that he thought he would never do that. But since he was playing the bad guy in this film, Suriya decided to break the rule. “Just before the shoot I said, ‘Give me a cigarette,’ and we started shooting,” said the actor about his decision to break his rule.
Suirya and Karthik Subbaraj’s ‘Retro‘
Scheduled to hit theatres on May 1, Retro is touted to be a high-octane entertainer; the film incorporates the concepts of love, violence, promise, rowdyism, and hooliganism. Creating significant attention among the audience, the makers have dropped a few pulsating songs and an intense trailer. While the film was written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the music was handled by Santhosh Narayanan and editing by Shafiq.
