Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal recognised actor Mohanlal for being the top Goods And Service Tax (GST) payer at a ceremony on Tuesday. The event was part of the GST Day celebrations organised by the Central GST Department at Tagore Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram.
The minister awarded the recognition by conferring a commendation certificate, declaring the actor as the highest GST-paying person from the Malayalam film industry for the year 2024–25. The function was also attended by chief commissioner (CGST & Customs) Shaik Khader Rahman and commissioner (GST & Central Excise) K Kalimuthu.

The certificate, a formal document praising an individual’s exceptional services, along with other tax-compliance excellence recognition awards for institutions and individuals, were also distributed at the programme.
While receiving the award, the actor said paying taxes properly and guarding the country as a soldier are both part of serving the nation. Mohanlal also felicitated students who won competitions held in schools as part of the GST awareness programme.
After inaugurating the GST Day event, the finance minister said there are some practical problems with Goods and Service Tax (GST), which are yet to be resolved. He pointed out he was one of the few people who expressed dissent over GST in the joint select committee due to these problems.
The minister said Kerala is yet to receive its rightful share of GST revenue from goods brought in from other states, underlining the need to increase the state’s IGST share. “Even though the state’s GST collection growth is 24% between May 2024 and May 2025, the revenue growth in the same time frame is only 9%,” the minister said.
