Adding a golden stroke to his career and achievement catalogue, the Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas on Tuesday received the Septimus Award for Best Asian Actor for the performance in his recent blockbuster 2018: Everyone Is A Hero, a day prior to that the movie bagged official selection as the country’s official entry to the Oscars. The announcement was a double delight to Tovino Thomas and the entire cast and crew of the movie 2018. 

Bagging the honour, Tovino became the first south Indian actor to secure the Septimus Awards, a prestigious international award ceremony with a strong emphasis on discovering and encouraging new independent talents and supporting visionary films.

After receiving the award in a ostentatious event held in the city of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Tovino shared pictures of himself holding the prize statue. He also expressed his gratitude, remembered the 2018 Kerala floods, and dedicated the award for Keralites.

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. In 2018, Kerala began to fall when unexpected floods knocked on our doors. But then the world saw what Keralites were made of…”, reads the heartwarming note by the actor on social media.

The multi-starrer 2018 : Everyone Is A Hero is a fiction encompassed documentation of 2018 Kerala Floods, in which the state was forced to sacrifice a lot but survived as a result of well synchronised efforts by state departments, rescue and defence forces, local administration, executives, students, and public.

The movie is a true dedication for Kerala”s determination and unity, especially for the coastal fishing communities who came with their fishing boats, their only breadwinning mode, without thinking twice for the rescue operations.

The movie, which features how people of Kerala worked together to survive the calamity is now officially selected by the Film Federation of India as the country’s official entry to the Oscars. The flood struck Kerala and how the people of the south Indian state managed to survive from a totally unpredictable and unexpected natural adversity is a must watch.

The movie is a documentation to learn humanity, synergy, and survival machination if one is plunged into an unpleasant, unfamiliar circumstance, especially for those who haven”t experienced and witnessed such a situation in real life.

“Thank you SEPTIMIUS AWARDS for selecting me as the Best Asian Actor. It will always remain close to my heart… What makes this international recognition special is that this is for my performance in the movie 2018. This one… is for Kerala”, wrote Tovino on social media.

The movie which became one of the fastest to gross Rs 100 crore in ticket sales features an ensemble cast of top Malayalam actors including Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Narain, Lal, Indrans, and Aju Varghese.

Even though the movie received a limited release due to limited promotion and advertisements, it soon became a sensation in Kerala as well as overseas grossing over Rs 200 crore from its worldwide ticket sales. The movie is the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all-time and one of the highest grossing Indian film of 2023.

Tovino Thomas who made his debut in 2012 with the film Prabhuvinte Makkal got a breakthrough with his role in the 2015 RS Vimal directed Ennu Ninte Moideen. He starred the titular character in the 2021 Netflix superhero film Minnal Murali, directed by Basil Joseph.
