Netflix’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is the latest series to become the fodder for Instagram to make reels on. And why wouldn’t it be? From glamourous and finely crafted costumes with striking jewellery pieces from chokers to heavy chandbalis, nath balis, and hathphools, the show captures a sophisticated and elegant sense of style of the rich and influential.

But that’s not it. The beauty of the Urdu language shines through in its dialogues in the series set in pre-Independence Lahore.

Stepping into the world of Heeramandi? More like Sabji Mandi. Showing the infusion of tawaif’s (courtesan’s) dramatic flair as seen in Heeramandi into modern life is this fabulously created short film where the ladies dress up in their precious lehengas and shararas, adorning themselves with exquisite jewellery. They ask, “Kya Janaab, ab aap dhaniya aur hari mirch ka bhi hisaab lagayenge?”

Kavita, who goes by the Instagram handle aakhiri_pasta, effectively captures the appeal of the language, thanks to the show. From ijaazat to khaufnaak, or tehzeeb or even, wait for it, zehen. Everything simply sounds better in Urdu, doesn’t it? As seen in the reel, perhaps we should start speaking in Urdu more.

Speaking of incorporating the language into our modern world, content creator viren.tak captures the zest added by the beautiful language, especially when dealing with modern-day dating problems. Not to forget the elegant costumes, of course.

Highlighting the fact that it”s not just the words but also the person saying them, comedian Saloni Daini shows a more realistic portrayal of trying to attempt a hand at sounding sophisticated. While trying to pronounce “khwaab,” things can go a little overboard with the ‘kh” sounding more like gurgling sounds.

Another reel embodies the effect of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi and how the series’ aftereffects tend to last quite long.
