Kolkota’s SSKM Hospital Performs 175 Gallbladder Surgeries In 5 Days, Sets Record
Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital has set a remarkable record by performing 175 gallbladder surgeries within five days. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the achievement, calling it a “mission mode endeavour” aimed at reducing the backlog of gallbladder cases. She also lauded the hospital’s doctors, nurses, and staff for their dedication.
“All these surgeries were successful, and these were in addition to the usual operations in the hospital. During these five days from Monday to Friday, there were 390 other major surgical cases in addition to those 175 special drive cases,” Banerjee stated. She urged hospitals across the state to adopt similar strategies to address long-pending surgeries.
Gallbladder surgery, known as cholecystectomy, is performed to remove the gallbladder, a small organ beneath the liver that stores bile. It is commonly required when gallstones cause severe pain, inflammation, or blockages in the bile ducts. Other conditions, such as infections or polyps, may also necessitate removal.
The procedure is typically done using laparoscopic surgery, where small incisions are made in the abdomen, and a camera guides surgical instruments to remove the gallbladder. This minimally invasive technique results in faster recovery and less post-operative pain. However, in cases of severe inflammation or complications, open surgery may be required, which involves a larger incision and a longer healing period.
Recovery from gallbladder surgery usually takes a few weeks, with laparoscopic patients healing faster. While the gallbladder is not essential for digestion, some individuals experience temporary dietary adjustments post-surgery. Risks associated with the procedure include infection, bleeding, and bile duct injury, though these complications are rare.
Banerjee emphasised that the success of this initiative showcases what healthcare professionals can achieve when working in unison with dedication. She urged hospitals across the state to implement similar focused interventions to clear pending cases efficiently.
Glad to inform that our very own apex level Government facility in Kolkata, SSKM Hospital, has created a record by performing waiting-in-the-queue 175 gallbladder surgeries in last 5 days!
This was a mission mode endeavour to clear the waiting gallbladder cases, and also to…
