Kolkata, West Bengal: A horrific gang rape inside the South Calcutta Law College campus in Kasba has shaken West Bengal, triggering public outrage and intense political debate. Three men, including a former student and two current students, have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a law student on Wednesday night, June 25.

According to the FIR lodged by the survivor, the assault took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm inside the campus premises. The Kolkata police have arrested two of the accused on Thursday evening, and the third later the same night.

The main accused has been identified as Manojit Mishra (31), a former student of the college, who is also a practising criminal lawyer at Alipore Court. Mishra’s Facebook profile lists him as the organisational secretary of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress.

The other two accused are Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), both third-semester students at the same college, and reportedly associated with TMCP as well.

While TMCP State President Trinankur Bhattacharya distanced the organisation from the accused, he called for “exemplary action” if the allegations are proven true. “The accused is an employee at the college, not a member of the student council,” he added.

TMC condemned the incident and said, “@KolkataPolice have swiftly apprehended all 3 accused, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear.” The statement also renewed calls for the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to be implemented at the national level, criticising the BJP-led central government for inaction.

However, the BJP lashed out at the ruling party. Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT cell head, said, “If reports are to be believed, the girl was taken to a bathroom first, then dragged into a room after screaming. If that’s the case, was everyone in the building deaf, blind, or just afraid to speak against TMCP? Let should IMMEDIATELY come out clean on these allegations!”

Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, also condemned the incident and said, “Such atrocities in a sacred place like a college campus are shameful. The Trinamool student leaders are abusing their power, turning campuses into crime zones.”

All three accused were produced before the Alipore Court on Thursday. Police sought a 14-day custody, and the court remanded them in police custody until Tuesday next week.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the case and demanded a report from the Kolkata Police Commissioner within 72 hours.

The crime comes less than a year after a post-graduate medical student was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024.
