Kolkata Court Awards Life Sentence To Sanjay Roy In RG Kar Doctor Case

The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court on Monday, January 20  awarded life sentence for Sanjay Roy, the convict in the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Kolkata, West Bengal: The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court on Monday, January 20  awarded life sentence for Sanjay Roy, the convict in the rape and murder of a doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Judge said that it is not the rarest of the rare case.  The CBI has pushed for corporate punishment stating that this is the rarest of the rare crime and “doctor was doing a service to the society.”

“You will be in the prison till the last day of your life,” Judge said while reading the order.” Meanwhile, Roy made statement for first time during the hearing and told the court that he has not done anything and has been falsely implicated.

The Court has also ordered the state to pay victim’s parents a compensation of Rs 17 lakh; Rs 10 lakh for the death of the victim, and Rs 7 lakh for rape. The parents of the victim told the court that they don’t want compensation and only want justice for the daughter.

The semi-naked body of 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor’s body was found in the seminar hall on the premises of the institution on August 9. Roy, a civic volunteer on the police welfare board, arrested shortly after the attack. The crime has sparked huge national outrage. The post-mortem revealed she was raped and suffered 16 external and nine internal injuries before being strangled to death.

Last week, Roy was found guilty under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

On Sealdah Court judgement, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reacted that she is not satisfied with it. “All of us demanded a death sentence but the court gave the life imprisonment,” Banerjee said.
