The accused arrested for raping and murdering a doctor inside Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital went back to his house and slept after allegedly committing the crime, the police said. The next morning, he washed his clothes to destroy evidence of the crime, as per reports.
However, the police found blood marks on the man’s shoes while conducting a search. Although the accused, Sanjay Roy, is not linked to the hospital professionally, he frequently visited the place as a civic volunteer. Roy was arrested on Saturday and has been sent to 14-day police custody.

Following the recovery of the body of the postgraduate trainee doctor from the hospital’s seminar hall on Friday, a massive protest has erupted with junior doctors demanding immediate punishment of those responsible for the crime.
The woman had gone to the hall to rest after having a meal, her colleagues claimed. Based on the initial probe, the crime is believed to have occurred between 3 am and 6 am.
The initial autopsy of the woman revealed multiple injuries across her body. The victim was bleeding from both her eyes, mouth, and private parts. Injuries were found on her face, left leg, lips, belly, right hand, and ring finger. A hair clip was also found near the victim’s private parts, stated the report.
Reportedly, circumstantial evidence suggested that there was a possibility that the woman was first murdered via strangulation and smothering and then raped.
The accused has been charged under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He was produced before the Sealdah court, which remanded him to police custody.
“We are also talking to persons who were on duty on Thursday night till the next morning. CCTV footage is also being checked,” the police officer said.
The Kolkata Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), along with the forensic unit, to probe the crime. Additionally, two security officials have been expelled following the incident by the hospital authorities for failing to do their job.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee vowed to seek the death penalty for the accused. She also added that she has no objections if the family and students demand a CBI probe and extended her support to the protesting doctors.
