Shortly after the clock struck 12 and India celebrate its 78th Independence Day, unidentified miscreants vandalised and attacked the protesting doctors at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The unidentified individuals allegedly attacked protesters, including doctors and nurses, and damaged police vehicles.
A 31-year-old trainee doctor’s body was found in the seminar hall on the premises of the institution on August 9. Since then, widespread protests have taken over various parts of the country against the brutal rape and murder of the Kolkata doctor.

Medical staff present at the site during the incident alleged that the mob deliberately vandalised the area where a peaceful protest was being held.
On Wednesday, people, especially thousands of women, took to the streets in West Bengal under the banner ‘Reclaim the Night,’ demanding justice for the victim and urging authorities to make public space safer for women at night.

During the peaceful protests, a group of unidentified men entered the hospital and ransacked the emergency department. Videos of the clashes surfaced online as doctors condemned the incident and called for the state government to take action against the men and enhance the security of the staff.
Chilling updates from the case further shook people after reports of possible gangrape emerged following the autopsy report. In an interview with India Today, Dr. Raja Dhar, Director and Head of Pulmonology, CK Birla Hospital, said that the nature of the injury and the force used show that it cannot be done without the help of two or more people.

The preliminary autopsy report revealed that the woman was sexually assaulted and incurred multiple injuries across her body. Kolkata Police arrested civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy as the prime accused.
