Why Are Doctors Across India Protesting?

Following the rape-murder of a Kolkata PGT trainee doctor, several doctors have taken to the streets to protest, demanding justice for the victim.

On August 9, a post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor was brutally raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

The preliminary autopsy report revealed that the woman was sexually assaulted and incurred multiple injuries across her body.

The Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer in the police welfare board who had access to several departments in the hospital.

Following the incident, the Federation Of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has given a call for a nationwide medical strike on Monday. Resident doctors of West Bengal are on an indefinite strike demanding justice for the victim.

Doctors from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and several other cities across India are protesting today. They announced that all elective services would be stopped till the investigation is completed.

All government medical colleges in West Bengal, AIIMS in Delhi, and NIMHANS have also declared ‘cease work.’

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that her government will seek the death penalty for the accused and the case will be taken up in a fast-track court.
