Doctors in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and several other cities across India are protesting today and announced that all elective services would be stopped till the investigation is completed in the case.

The Federation Of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has given a call for a nationwide medical strike on Monday, in response to the recent rape and murder of a resident doctor in Kolkata. Resident doctors of West Bengal are on indefinite strike demanding justice for victim.

Doctors in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and several other cities across India are protesting today and announced that all elective services would be stopped till the investigation is completed in the case. They have also demanded adequate security for all the medical staff. All government medical colleges in West Bengal have declared ‘cease-work’; following, AIIMS in Delhi and NIMHANS have also declared ‘cease-work’.

A post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9, Thursday while on duty. The body of the 32-year-old woman was found inside the seminar hall of the hospital on Friday. The deceased was a second-year student of the chest medicine department. The preliminary autopsy report revealed that woman was sexually assaulted and multiple injuries across her body.

“As a mark of solidarity with our colleagues at RG Kar, we announce a nationwide suspension of elective services in hospitals starting Monday, August 12. This decision is not made lightly but is necessary to ensure that our voices are heard and that the demands for justice and safety are addressed without further delay,” Doctors Association said in a statement.

Kolkata Police identified and arrested Sanjay Roy on Saturday, prime suspect in the case. Roy, a civic volunteer in the police welfare board, is not associated with the hospital but had access to several departments. As a volunteer, he is assigned to assist lower-ranked police officers who were admitted to hospitals, and provide support and assistance as required.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday announced that her government will seek death penalty for the accused and the case will be taken up in a fast track court. City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said that the investigation is “transparent” and requested people not to spread rumours.
