While doctors across the country call for the safety of medical staff following the brutal rape-murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a female junior doctor was attacked by a patient at a hospital in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati. A clip of the incident recorded in the CCTV camera of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) has surfaced online.

In the video clip, the man can be seen grabbing the doctor by her hair and slamming her head on the steel frame of a hospital bed. Soon after, other doctors standing nearby rush to her rescue, and the attacker is overpowered and separated away from the junior doctor.

The intern, in a letter to SVIMS director and vice chancellor Dr. RV Kumar, said that she was on duty in the Emergency Medicine Department on Saturday when she was attacked by Bangaru Raju, a patient. She also added that no security personnel were present in the area to help her.

As per Kumar, Bangarraju was diagnosed with a conversion disorder and was unconscious when he arrived. When he suddenly gained consciousness, he attacked the doctor before collapsing again.

Highlighting the need for security of the staff, the doctor stated, “If the patient had been armed with a sharp weapon, the situation could have escalated with severe consequences.”

In response, SVIM doctors staged a protest, demanding safety measures at the workplace. The resident doctors were already protesting in solidarity with the Kolkata trainee doctor.

The incident sparked outrage from doctors who have been demanding the Central Protection Act. Introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2022, the act aims to provide grievance redressal and ensure all healthcare personnel the right to work in a safe workplace, as well as secure the rights of patients.

The demands for the act reignited after the horrifying rape murder of the doctor surfaced in Kolkata.
