What Mamata Banerjee Said After Meeting With The Protesting Doctors

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met with the protesting junior doctors on Monday, addressing their demands following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor. The doctors have been protesting for weeks, demanding action and safety measures.

After the meeting, Banerjee announced that three of the four demands had been accepted. She urged the junior doctors to return to work, emphasising the need to prevent further suffering for the public, particularly with the ongoing issues of dengue, malaria, and floods. Banerjee also stated that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal had agreed to resign, as requested by the protestors, and a new DC would be appointed shortly. Additionally, two out of the three individuals from the health department, whose removal was demanded, would step down.

Banerjee assured that a committee under the chief secretary would address any further concerns. While some agreements were reached, a junior doctor from the delegation noted that no decision to withdraw the protest would be made without consulting their colleagues.

This meeting followed several earlier attempts at dialogue, with the state government making repeated efforts to address the protestors’ concerns.
