Mass Resignation Of Doctors In West Bengal As Talks With Government Fails

The agitation against the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor of the RG Kar hospital by doctors has shake the West Bengal government since the beginning. Though a talk between the government and the protesters reached a resolution in which the government agreed to address the woes of the doctors, including the assurance of workplace safety, the doctors continued their protest, stating that they would not relent until the promises were implemented.

The junior doctors’ stir has been strengthened further since the senior doctors in various government-run medical institutions tendered mass resignations on Wednesday in support of the protest, demanding justice for the RG Kar victim and the implementation of the safety measures in hospitals.

The meeting between the government and a delegation of the doctors failed, which was started around 9.45 am, due to the alleged lack of action from the government on the assurance they got. After the meeting, one of the junior doctors expressed her grudge that, despite their requests to issue some directives or provide timelines for when our demands will be met, the government declined.

“The government only wanted us to withdraw the hunger strike. Our colleagues are on hunger strike for around 100 hours now. The government, however, said that they will do an assessment after the puja. We are totally frustrated,” Hindustan Times quoted a junior doctor, Debasish Halder.

However, the doctors have added that the mass resignation did not create trouble for the healthcare services at hospitals and medical colleges. As per the report, a total of 19 doctors from Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital, 42 from North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, Siliguri, 35 from Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, and around 70 doctors from Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, have given their resignation.

The junior doctors, who are currently on an indefinite hunger strike, have held rallies demanding speedy investigation into the rape and murder of the junior doctor. Governor C V Ananda Bose met the junior doctors during their indefinite huger strike in the Esplanade area in the evening and discussed their health.
