Amid calls for ensuring the safety and security for doctors in West Bengal, a doctor was reportedly shot dead at Nima Hospital in Delhi’s Jaitpur area on Thursday morning.

The doctor, identified as Javed Akhtar, was killed by two men who had come to the private hospital seeking treatment for an injury.

The men requested to meet Dr. Akhtar and were given an appointment for the same. When they visited him inside the cabin, the accused shot him at point-blank range and fled the scene, according to the police.

The District Crime Team and FSL Rohini Team were called at the scene of the crime shortly after the incident.

Based on preliminary investigations, the two men may be minors, and prima facie the incident is believed to be a case of targeted killing.

Junior doctors in West Bengal returned to an ‘indefinite strike’ on Tuesday, demanding the safety and security of medical professionals at all hospitals and clinics in the state following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The doctors protest reignited after medical staff were allegedly attacked by the relatives of a patient who had died during treatment in the state-run Sagore Dutta Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in North 24 Parganas on September 27. Four people were arrested in the case, and the security of the hospital has been tightened.
