New Delhi: Congress on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government of ignoring 70-year-old farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s hunger strike at the Khanauri border in Punjab since November 26. For over 40 days, the farmer has been on strike seeking the implementation of a number of demands, including an Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantee, and a loan waiver, among others.
Accusing the Prime Minister of not yet paying heed to the farmer leader, the Congress, in an X post, further alleged that the agriculture minister is also following the path of the Prime Minister and “openly lying that he meets the farmers every Tuesday.”

“This shows that Narendra Modi and his government have no sympathy for the farmers. They are not bothered by the helplessness and troubles of the farmers,” the Congress said, adding that it was not the first time, as more than 700 farmers have been martyred due to “Narendra Modi’s arrogance.”
The party further pointed out that nails were laid on the path of the farmers coming to Delhi, tear gas shells were fired, water cannons were used, and they were stopped by putting up barricades. The Congress added, asserting that the farmers of the country are their pride and the prime minister should leave his ego and talk to them. The party then said otherwise the country will never forgive.

Recently, doctors had expressed concern over the health of Dallewal, noting that he is “unable to speak,” and the Supreme Court had also ordered the government to shift the farmer leader to a hospital. On January 6, after the Punjab government informed the Supreme Court about a scheduled meeting with septuagenarian farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a SC-appointed panel met the farmer leader.
After the 2020 farmers’ protest demanding the withdrawal of farmers’ laws, the farmers began a fresh strike, demanding MSP and justice for the victims of the 2020 protest. The farmers have been continuously.
