Sanjay Roy, the primary suspect in the horrific rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor, exhibits a chilling lack of remorse and an “animal-like instinct,” according to a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer. Described as a “pervert with a severe addiction to pornography,” Roy recounted the brutal crime in graphic detail, showing no hesitation, the officer reported.

“The man showed no repentance and narrated the entire episode giving every minute detail without hiccups. It appeared he had no remorse,” the officer said.

The crime, which has sparked national outrage, took place at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a state-run facility. The doctor, exhausted after a 36-hour shift, was attacked while resting. The post-mortem revealed she was raped and suffered 16 external and nine internal injuries before being strangled to death.

Sanjay Roy, arrested shortly after the attack, was captured on CCTV footage entering the building around the time of the crime. The Bluetooth device found near the scene was connected to Roy’s phone. His role as a civic volunteer on the police welfare board allowed him easy access to several hospital departments.

CCTV footage also placed him near the chest department at 11 am on August 8, and then again at 4 am on August 9. The woman’s time of death is estimated to be between 3 am and 5 am on August 9. The CBI has gathered extensive technical and scientific evidence connecting Roy to the crime scene.

Sources said that Roy had a history of inappropriate conduct with women at the hospital. The investigative team found pornographic material on his mobile phone.

He had been married four times. Three of his wives reportedly left him due to his abusive behavior, while the fourth died of cancer, per reports. Roy’s mother-in-law claimed that he had physically abused his ex-wife, even causing a miscarriage when she was three months pregnant. She demanded that Roy be “hanged” for his crimes.

“My relations with him were very tense. They were married for 2 years. His marriage to my daughter was his second marriage. Initially, everything was good for 6 months. When she was 3-month pregnant, he caused a miscarriage. He thrashed her, a police complaint was registered for the same. Following this, my daughter continued being ill, I bore all her expenses for medicines. Sanjay was not good,” she told reporters.

She further alleged that Roy, taking advantage of his position as a civic volunteer, was in close contact with the police and had defrauded several people by promising them police jobs in exchange for money.

“Hang him or do whatever you want with him. I won’t speak about the crime. He could not have done it alone. He doesn’t have the capacity to do it alone,” she added.

However, Roy’s mother denied these claims, alleging that her son confessed to the crime under police pressure. “My son is innocent. He admitted to the crime because of police pressure,” she said.

Investigators are now probing whether a broader conspiracy might be at play, including the involvement of former RG Kar Medical College principal Dr Sandip Ghosh, who has been questioned extensively. The CBI is reportedly considering polygraph tests for Roy, Ghosh, and others as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Kolkata Police are also looking into allegations of financial misconduct involving Dr Sandip Ghosh.
