India's Ongoing Crisis With Women's Safety

With low conviction rates, India faces a severe crisis when it comes to women’s safety.

The citizens of India are angry and exhausted. Since the news about the Kolkata trainee doctor’s brutal rape and murder surfaced, massive protests led by junior doctors have spread across the country, demanding justice for the victim and her family.

Since then, more and more horrifying cases of rape have made headlines.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh, a man was convicted of raping his minor stepdaughter, whom he was allegedly sexually abusing for the past three years. His stepdaughter was ten years old.

In Sonbhadra, another minor girl died after allegedly being raped by her sports teacher. She was 14 years old.

In Ballia, a man was arrested after he allegedly raped a minor girl and posted a video of the crime online on August 6 when she went to visit a friend. She is 11 years old.

In Bengaluru, while returning home, a woman was allegedly raped by an unknown biker on August 11.

A recent report by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed that in 2022, India recorded over 4.45 lakh cases of crimes against women. That is 51 cases every hour. And these are just the reported cases.

In Maharashtra, a 31-year-old man allegedly flashed and sexually assaulted a minor girl on August 15. She is 8-years-old.

In Dehradun, a minor girl hailing from Punjab was allegedly gang raped on a public bus on August 13. She is 15 years old.

In Tamil Nadu, a minor girl was allegedly raped while 13 others were sexually abused at a fake NCC camp in Krishnagiri. She is 13 years old.

In Madhya Pradesh, a 69-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl on August 14 when she was alone at home. She is 16-year-old.

With low conviction rates, India faces a severe crisis when it comes to women’s safety. With highly publicised cases such as the Kolkata case, demands for strict laws and stringent punishments have led the people to hit the streets. And once again, the looming question remains “Which of us is next?”
