The rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has sparked mass outrage and protests, leading to a surge of information on social media.

On Monday, the Kolkata police urged the public not to share misinformation regarding the case. In a Facebook post, Kolkata Police addressed the challenges they are facing. “It has come to our notice that several factually incorrect and unverified claims are being widely circulated on social media. We urge everyone not to share or believe any so-called ‘facts’ about the case, as they are nothing but unfounded rumours,” the police stated.

Journalist Tamal Saha shared some of the ‘insensitive’ pieces of misinformation that were surfacing on X. He wrote, “…in the past 24 hours have come across 7 insensitive pieces of misinformation that has captured the thought process”.

One of the theories that has been floating on social media states that the pelvic bone of the victim was broken, however, it wasn’t true but that doesn’t make the crime less gruesome, Tamal stated.

Meanwhile, the name of an innocent doctor floated on social media which triggered public sentiment. When Tamal visited him at the hospital, he found the young doctor traumatized.

A semen of more than one individual was found, another theory stated.

Yet another theory suggested that the doctors knew about some crime, thus they eliminated it with rape.

He added that there was a change in the nature of the protest which was earlier a “student protest” till yesterday when few came alleging that the accused belongs to the student organization of a political party.

Some have even come alleging that the police had tampered with the CCTV footage destroyed the autopsy report and called it a suicide.

Replying to the demand for making the interrogation details, the progress of the investigation, and other information public, Tamal said that if the culprit gets encountered, a few sections will come up stating that he had been eliminated to hide the real culprits.
