Former AAP Councillor Tahir Hussain Sentenced To Life Imprisonment In IB Officer's Murder Case
New Delhi: Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Tahir Hussain has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma.
Delhi’s Karkardooma court pronounced the sentence on Friday, July 31, noting that the manner of the crime was of utmost brutality. The court pointed out that the savagery did not end with the murder. “His body was dragged into a drain nearby as if the hatred was still not satiated,” the court said, adding that the crime tilts towards the rarest of rare.

The former councillor’s lawyer Tara Narula argued that he was only in the crowd and not directly linked to the crime. After the verdict, Tahir said that he would continue to fight for justice.
The incident took place during the 2020 Delhi riot, in which the IB officer was dragged by the mob and attacked with knives, sticks, rods and stones before his body was dumped in a drain during the violence. The officer’s body with at least 51 knife wounds was found the next day.

“None of the of five accused, none used a knife… We believe our client is innocent. We are preparing to file an appeal,” the lawyer said.
