Alappuzha, Kerala: In a major medical negligence, a surgical scissors was found inside the abdomen of a 51-year-old woman in Kerala’s Alappuzha district. The woman had undergone a hysterectomy (uterus removal surgery) at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital five years ago.

Notably, Dr Lalitha Ambika, who allegedly carried out the surgery removing a tremor, said nothing will happen if the scissors remain in the stomach, not just five years but even fifty years.

The scissor was found in the abdomen of the patient, Usha Josephkutty, a resident of Punnapra in Allapuzha district, after she complained of persistent abdominal pain and blood in her urine. The scissor was identified as a long, curved Metzenbaum scissors used in surgeries.

The patient has been undergoing treatment at various places for recurring pain, with the cause remained undetected. It was on February 18 that the woman took an X-ray, which shockingly revealed the presence of the scissors. The woman had undergone the surgery on May 2021.
