Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed senior Congress leader Ajay Maken as the treasurer of the All India Congress Committee, with immediate effect. In a press statement released today, the party appreciated the contribution of the outgoing Congress party treasurer Pawan Kumar Bansal. 59-year old Maken is currently a general secretary of All India Congress Committee and a member of Congress Working Committee, party’s top decision making body.
Maken”s appointment is significant as a rejuvenated Congress party is heading for five assembly elections this year and a crucial general elections in the first half of next year.
Maken, who is currently in Raipur attending the candidates’ screening committee meeting for the Chhattisgarh assembly election, called the development “a significant responsibility”.
He extended his gratitude to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former Congress Presidents Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, and KC Venugopal, party’s general secretary-organisation “for placing their trust” in him
Maken, a former union minister, assured both Congress leaders and the workers that “as a custodian of their contributions”, he “will work with the utmost diligence, honesty, and dedication”.
