Allahabad High Court Grants Bail To Azam Khan, Son In Dual PAN Card Case

The Allahabad High Court has granted bail to Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan and his son, Abdullah Azam Khan, in the dual PAN card case, suspending their prison sentences while refusing to stay their convictions.

A single-judge bench of Justice Samit Gopal allowed their criminal revision petitions, granting them relief from the sentences imposed by the trial court.

However, the convictions remain in place, and the order does not reverse their existing electoral disqualifications.

The case stems from a 2019 FIR filed by BJP leader Akash Saxena, who alleged that Abdullah Azam Khan possessed two PAN cards carrying different dates of birth, January 1, 1993, and September 30, 1990.

The allegation was that the documents were used to bypass the minimum age requirement for contesting assembly elections.

A trial court in Rampur convicted the father and son under provisions relating to cheating, forgery, the use of forged documents, and criminal conspiracy.

Before the High Court’s order, the Rampur court had enhanced Azam Khan’s prison sentence to 10 years and imposed a fine of ₹5 lakh.

Abdullah Azam Khan was sentenced to seven years in prison, with his fine increased to ₹3.5 lakh.

The bail order comes amid separate financial proceedings involving Azam Khan’s Mohammad Ali Jauhar University.

The Enforcement Directorate recently attached assets linked to the university, with an estimated market value of ₹1,170 crore, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The latest order provides relief from imprisonment in the dual PAN card case, but the convictions remain legally in force.
