Rampur, Uttar Pradesh: A local court in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur has convicted senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan and his son and former MLA Abdullah Azam, sentencing both to seven years imprisonment in the alleged fake PAN card case. After the court held the duo guilty, they were taken into custody.

The Court had ordered their immediate custody following the conviction. The development has sparked political buzz, with many alleging that the whole case is politically motivated. Former minister and SP leader I P Singh asked the authorities to show mercy given that Azam Khan Sahib is 83 years old.

Noting that Khan has been a cabinet minister 4 times, MLA 7 times, and MP, Singh pointed out that there will be thousands of people in the country who have two PAN cards each. “Many BJP MPs, MLAs, and deputy chief ministers have fake certificates and degrees; is any action being taken against them?,” he wrote on X.

The verdict was declared in an FIR originally filed by BJP MLA Aakash Saxena. The father-son duo will now be sent to jail following the MP/MLA court’s verdict. The court also imposed a fine on the alleged accused persons.

The accused have been convicted under IPC sections 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 420 (cheating), 471 (fraudulently or deceptively using an authentic document which he knows or has reason to believe to be a forged document) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy).

The BJP leader, who is now a sitting MLA, had filed the case in 2019 at the Ganj police station, alleging that Abdullah had used two different PAN cards, bearing different dates of birth, and derived undue benefit from their use. It is alleged that Abdullah had been using a PAN card that showed his date of birth as January 1, 1993, which corresponded with his educational high school records.
