“Blatant Assault On Democracy”: Mamata Banerjee On Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest; TMC To Meet Election Commission

Edited by Aishwarya Krishnan

Amidst the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee condemned the arrest and expressed her support for the Kejriwal family.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Banerjee stated that she has directly reached out to the Aam Aadmi Party leader’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, to extend her support and solidarity.

“It’s outrageous that while elected opposition CMs are being deliberately targeted and arrested while individuals accused under CBI/ED investigations are allowed to continue their malpractices with impunity, especially after aligning with the BJP,” said the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Calling it “a blatant assault on democracy,”  Ms. Banerjee also informed that the INDIA alliance will be meeting the Election Commission to question the strategic targeting of leaders from the opposition party and arrest them. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O’Brien and Md. Nadimul Haque have been chosen to represent the party during the meeting.

Several leaders from the opposition have called the arrest politically motivated and against democracy. Kejriwal’s arrest comes amidst the Congress claiming to have their bank accounts frozen by the BJP.

On Thursday, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal was arrested after hours of questioning in relation to a liquor scam case. As per recent updates, the AAP leader has withdrawn his plea challenging his arrest due to a clash with the remand. On Friday, the Delhi Police detained the party leaders, including Atishi and Saurab Bharadwaj, during a nationwide protest led by the AAP. Barricades have been set up outside the headquarters of the BJP, with instructions to detain protestors.
