“India’s jobs famine continues to worsen, thanks to the 10 years of the Modi government,” wrote the Congress General Secretary in charge of communication on his X handle on January 11. Jairam Ramesh said that, as per the data released by the CMIE for the October–December quarter, unemployment for youth aged 25–29 was the highest in almost 4 years. The Congress leader said that the unemployment rate was at 15.5 percent in December 2023 and alleged that unemployment now is “worse” than it was during the COVID-19 pandemic. “For youth aged 20-24, unemployment rate hit a peak of 45.5%!” Jairam Ramesh added.
Jairam Ramesh claimed that for those between ages 30 and 34, the unemployment rate is at a three-year high. The Congress leader also pointed out that the crisis is “especially bad” in rural areas and claimed that more families are turning to MGNREGA as there are no other jobs available. Jairam Ramesh also added in his X post that the country”s youth deserve growth that delivers them good quality jobs, not joblessness and “pakora” shops.
