Alt News co-founder and fact checker Muhammed Zubair on Monday shared in his recent post that several Indian X users” accounts of critics of BJP government have been withheld or suspended.

The account suspended includes that of ground reporters and influencers. Prominent farm unionists covering the ongoing farmer”s protest ‘Dilli Chalo’ are also included among the accounts that got suspended. Zubair sharing the list of names of the accounts that got suspended wrote on X, “Sharing a few accounts. But there are many more X accounts which were suspended or withheld in India”.

The accounts listed by the factchecker are @PunYaab, @GaonSavera, @mandeeppunia1, @tractor2twitr_i, @TribalArmy, @Rattan1990, @HansrajMeena, @PandherSarvan and @ramanmann1974.

He has also requested the restoration of the accounts to Elon Musk.

He wrote on X, “A lot of X accounts critical of BJP Govt have either been suspended or withheld in India. Many influential X accounts of ground reporters/influencers/prominent farm unionists covering Farmers Protest in India are suspended too. Sharing a few accounts. But there are many more X accounts which were suspended or withheld in India. Please restore them all @X@Support@elonmusk”.

The post was reposted by many journalists. Saurav Das reposting it, wrote, “Atrocious! So casually freedom of speech, a fundamental right, is being taken away”.

An academic writer, Priyamvada Gopal wrote, “World”s Largest Democracy under Modi. And Free Speech Elon”.

Another journalist Ms Aflatoon criticising the Modi government wrote in Hindi, “Now all of them will be called anti-national and terrorists. People who came to power on the basis of social media are now afraid of the increasing power of social media”.

This ain’t the first time the X handle has suspended accounts that targeted the BJP government and brought out the truth regarding the attacks on members of the religious minorities in India.

Earlier in January, X suspended the account of Hindutva Watch, a research initiative to monitor reports of attacks on members of religious minorities in India. The account provided critical source evidence for activists, journalists, and lawmakers who aim to combat hate crimes in the country.
