Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh died at the age of 92 on Thursday, December 26, 2024. He was rushed to AIIMS Delhi’s emergency department earlier in the evening after his health took a turn for the worse.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) announced with profound grief that former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92.
According to the hospital, Dr. Singh was being treated for age-related medical conditions and suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home.

Despite immediate resuscitative measures and emergency treatment at AIIMS, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM who left behind a legacy of remarkable service to the nation.
Following his demise Priyanka Gandhi shared a mourning note on social media, she wrote: ” Few people in politics inspire the kind of respect that Sardar Manmohan Singh ji did. His honesty will always be an inspiration for us and he will forever stand tall among those who truly love this country as someone who remained steadfast in his commitment to serve the nation despite being subjected to unfair and deeply personal attacks by his opponents. He was genuinely egalitarian, wise, strong-willed and courageous until the end. A uniquely dignified gentleman in the rough world of politics.”

Born on September 26, 1932, he served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, making him the fourth longest-serving Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Narendra Modi.
He had contributed a lot to Indian politics, economics, academia and bureaucracy. Throughout his tenure, Singh implemented several key policies, including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and the Right to Information Act.

He also played a crucial role in India’s economic reforms, liberalising the Indian economy and encouraging growth in the Indian market.
Singh was survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur and their three daughters, Upinder Singh, Daman Singh and Amrit Singh. Upinder Singh, his eldest daughter is a professor of history at Ashoka University.

Former President of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed said that he found Manmohan Singh as a “benevolent father figure” and a good friend of Maldives. Taking to X, he wrote, “So sad to hear Manmohan Singh has passed. I always found him a delight to work with, and like a benevolent father figure. He was a good friend of the Maldives”.

Hamid Karzai, Former President of Afghanistan, said that India has lost one of its most illustrious sons. Calling Singh an “unwavering ally and friend to the people of Afghanistan”, Karzai and expressed his deepest condolences.
