New Delhi: Member of Parliament and National General Secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress, Abhishek Banerjee, has criticised prominent figures from the sports and film industries for their silence on the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. In a fiery statement, Banerjee accused these “role models” of failing to acknowledge the contributions of one of India’s greatest statesmen and raised concerns about their consistent silence on major national issues.
Dr. Singh, the architect of India’s 1991 economic reforms and later many pro-people initiatives like MGNREGA, RTI act, RTE act, Aadhaar among others died on December 26, 2024 at AIIMS Delhi and laid to rest on Saturday in the national capital. His death has been widely mourned across the political spectrum, with tributes pouring in from leaders and citizens alike. Banerjee, however, pointedly called out the lack of response from certain high-profile individuals outside politics.
“It is shocking to see the silence of so-called ‘role models’ who enjoy immense public admiration but fail to acknowledge the loss of a leader like Dr. Manmohan Singh. He reshaped India’s economy, guided us to global recognition, and deserves respect from all quarters,” said Banerjee.
In his address, Banerjee did not hold back from questioning the motives behind this silence. “Is it fear of government backlash? Or is it just a pattern of indifference? These same people were silent during the farmer protests, the CAA-NRC movement, and the ongoing crisis in Manipur. Their silence highlights a troubling detachment from the struggles of ordinary Indians.”
The Trinamool Congress leader called for a reassessment of who society considers its role models. “We must stop glorifying those who prioritise their careers and comfort over courage and accountability. Instead, we should look up to individuals who truly contribute to our nation—our freedom fighters, soldiers, and citizens working for the greater good.”
Banerjee’s impassioned appeal extended beyond criticism. He urged citizens to channel their energy into meaningful actions. “Let us honour Dr. Singh’s legacy not by mourning in silence but by uplifting others: support a child’s education, feed a family in need, or help someone struggling.”
While Banerjee’s remarks struck a chord with many, several prominent celebrities, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sania Mirza, Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor, Kapil Sharma, Mammootty, Chiranjeevi, Mohanlal, and Shabana Azmi, have expressed their tributes to the late Prime Minister.
Banerjee concluded with a vision for the New Year, urging Indians to demand accountability and integrity from those they elevate as icons. “The power of 140 crore Indians is immense. Let 2025 mark a shift in our collective consciousness towards justice, democracy, and the nation’s well-being. Jai Hind!”
