All the five judges of the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, who delivered the Babri Masjid- Ram Janmabhoomi case verdict in 2019, that led to the construction of the temple have been invited to the Ayodhya Ram temple consecration ceremony, set to be held on January 22.

The bench that ruled the case comprised former CJI Ranjan Gogoi, former CJI SA Bobde, present CJI DY Chandrachud, and former judges of the Supreme Court, Justices Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer.

Currently, nominated by the President, the ex-Chief Justice of India Gogoi is serving as a Rajya Sabha MP. Justice Bobde succeeded Justice Gogoi as the 47th Chief Justice of India from November 18, 2019, to April 23, 2021. Justice Chandrachud is currently serving as the Chief Justice of India. Justice Ashok Bhushan retired as a judge of the Supreme Court in July 2021, and Justice Nazeer is now serving as Governor of Andhra Pradesh.

The constitutional  bench in 2019 had in ruled to give the disputed land of Babri Masjid to the deity Ram Lalla and directed the government to provide an alternative five-acre plot to the Muslim side to build a mosque.

After starting the campaign by the Hindutva saffron camp, claiming that the Babri Masjid stood at the site of the birth place of Lord Ram in the 1980s, the group demolished the Masjid in the presence of leaders from Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).

However, with the Ram temple inauguration being celebrated as one of the ruling BJP’s election promises, there has been a long list of invitees. The invitees included over 50 jurists including former Chief Justices, judges and other prominent lawyers. General Tushar Mehta and former Attorney General KK Venugopal are also among the invitees.
