Cricketer-turned-politician Kirti Azad’s wife Poonam died today at around 12.40 PM. Announcing his wife’s death, the TMC MP in his social media platform wrote, “Left for her heavenly aboard at 12:40 PM. Thank you all for your good wishes.” The deceased was ill for a few years.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her mourning at the demise of Poonam Jha Azad, stating she has known Kirti Azad’s wife for a long time.

“I also knew that she was critically ill for the last few years. Kirti & other family members tried their best & were always beside her in her last fight. My sincere condolences to Kirti & other family members. May her soul rest in peace,” the chief minister reacted while responding to the news.
Azad is a TMC MP from Bardhaman-Durgapur. He is also the son of the former Bihar chief minister Bhagwat Jha Azad. The cricketer was also part of the Indian team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup. In 2019, Kirti joined the Congress Party and later in 2021 switched to Trinamool Congress after meeting the party supremo Mamata Banerjee.
