Kolkata, West Bengal: At least nine people from Bangladesh who had came to  Kolkata for medical treatment, lost their lives after a fire broke out around 2am on Wednesday at a hotel on Free School Street near New Market in Kolkata.

According to a police official, more fatalities are expected as firefighters are struggling to climb the staircase and reach the upper floors due to dense smoke. “While nine people have died, more deaths are feared,” news agency PTI reported citing the police officer. The official said that their priority is to rescue those trapped and determine the reasons for the fire.

Notably, the Kolkata hotel fire came two days after another deadly blaze at a hotel in West Bengal’s Birbhum district. A total of eight people had lost their lives during the fire at Hotel Bideshini in Tarapith on August 17.
