Mahua Moitra’s former partner, Jai Anant Dehadrai, has made serious allegations against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP, accusing her of sharing sensitive information on India’s internal affairs with a senior consular officer from a foreign country. Dehadrai, an advocate, took to X (formerly Twitter) to claim that Moitra communicated with the foreign officer through an encrypted connection, passing on details about India’s political developments.
Dehadrai further accused Moitra of assisting a foreign government in collecting intelligence about India, and further alleged that Moitra’s actions were motivated by her association with business tycoon Darshan Hiranandani, who allegedly bribed her to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi through industrialist Gautam Adani.
The Krishnagar MP has not responded to the allegations yet.
Dehadrai’s allegations come in the context of a broader controversy involving Moitra, who has been outspoken against the Modi government. In a recent speech in Parliament, Moitra criticised the reduced budget allocation for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), hinting that the cuts might be due to the overuse of these agencies for political purposes or their outsourcing to influential businessmen. She also referenced her own legal troubles, alleging that a prominent business tycoon from Ahmedabad had threatened another businessman into filing a false affidavit against her.
The situation escalated when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey responded to Moitra’s speech, confirming that he had lodged a complaint against her with the Lokpal. Dubey stated that the case Moitra referred to in her speech was related to his complaint, which is currently under investigation by the CBI and ED. He questioned why the individual Moitra mentioned had not come to India to address the matter.
Dehadrai has also brought in the name former BJD MP Pinaki Misra that adds another layer to the controversy as Dehadrai’s accusations against Moitra are intertwined with his legal dispute with Biju Janata Dal MP. In April, Misra filed a defamation suit against Dehadrai following the latter’s derogatory remarks and allegations of corruption. Misra’s legal action seeks an apology, damages, and a court order to prevent Dehadrai from making further defamatory statements.
Earlier, during the last Lok Sabha term, when Moitra was engulfed in the ‘cash-for-query’ scam, she had dismissed Dehadrai’s allegations as the actions of a “jilted ex,” pointing to their past relationship. She has also taken legal steps of her own, filing multiple police complaints against Dehadrai for criminal trespass, theft, and abuse. According to Moitra, the accusations were part of a broader campaign of harassment and revenge by Dehadrai. The allegations against Moitra had finally led to her dismissal from Lok Sabha after a parliamentary ethics panel recommended that on grounds that she had once received gifts like a scarf and makeup that.
