Mahua Moitra Gets Police Notice After Meme On Election Commission Row

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has received a notice from the Kerala Police after sharing a controversial social media post linked to the ongoing row involving the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The issue stems from a communication reportedly sent by the ECI to political parties in poll-bound Kerala, which mistakenly carried the official seal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The error quickly went viral, triggering sharp political reactions and raising questions about institutional neutrality.

Amid the backlash, Mahua Moitra shared a meme on X (formerly Twitter) featuring Gyanesh Kumar with a BJP symbol on his forehead.

In a sarcastic caption, she mocked the authorities and referenced “communal harmony” — a phrase used in the police notice issued in a related case.

According to officials, the notice alleges that such posts may “undermine communal harmony” and disrespect a constitutional body. The action comes days after Kerala cyber police issued a similar takedown notice to journalist Piyush Rai, asking him to remove content that shared the same document.

The police communication stated that the post “blatantly insults the Election Commission of India” and could incite division or disrupt public order. Media outlets were also advised to stop circulating the document and remove it from their platforms.

The controversy has intensified political tensions, with opposition parties like the Congress and the CPM criticising the incident. The CPM alleged that the error points to undue influence over independent institutions.

The Election Commission, however, clarified that the BJP seal appearing on the document was a clerical mistake. It has since suspended the staff member responsible and ordered an internal inquiry.

Despite the clarification, the issue continues to gain traction online, with political leaders and commentators debating the implications for institutional credibility and freedom of expression.
