CBI Has Time To Unearth The Two Missing Lipsticks But Can’t…: Mahua Moitra

TMC leader Mahua Moitra today slammed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for not taking any action under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) of 2002 against Gautam Adani’s alleged Rs 2100 crore bribery scam, which has been probed by the US federal investigation agency FBI.

The POCA provides CBI with powers to investigate and recover the proceeds of crime, with which the enforcement agencies can disrupt and recover the proceeds of crime where the respondent has not been convicted of a criminal offence.

In a social media post, the TMC MP wrote, “So @CBIHeadquarters finds time to call my friends yet again to unearth the two missing lipsticks but can’t start a PoCA investigation into ₹2100 crore bribery scam being investigated by FBI into Adani. Jiyo Independent Agencies!”

The Krishnanagar MP was referring to the CBI’s investigation into a gift involving one scarf, one lipstick, and one eye shadow, she allegedly received from Darshan Hiranandani, the CEO of the Hiranandani Group. There were allegations against Mahua Moitra that she received bribes for asking questions on behalf of the businessmen in the parliament, leading to her expulsion from the parliament before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Recently, a US District Court in New York has indicted Adani Group Chairman and several senior business executives for their alleged roles in multi-billion-dollar bribery and investor fraud schemes. Though a spokesperson for the Adani Group denied the charges, calling them “baseless,” the Indian billionaire is now facing serious fraud charges and a conspiracy to commit several economic crimes in both India and the US.

US Justice Department authorities alleged that Adani and seven other senior business executives offered over $265 million in bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar energy contracts.

India’s opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, had earlier called for an investigation against the business conglomerate. While demanding immediate arrest of Adani, Rahul Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Modi was protecting him.

The BJP has retorted labeling Congress as trying to attack the Indian market with foreign help. It was also alleged that the opposition leader thus tried to damage the Indian economy.
