Meghalaya Murder Case: Nearly 10 days after the body of Raja Raghuvanshi was recovered, his wife Sonam and three assailants from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested for allegedly planning his murder. The Police are still searching for the fourth accused in the case.

The Indore couple had gone missing on May 23 during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. The husband’s body was found in a deep gorge near a waterfall in Sohra area (Cherrapunjee) in Meghalaya on June 2

Sonam who was “missing” has voluntarily surrendered before the police at the Nandganj Police Station in Ghazipur district, Meghalaya Police states. According DGP I Nongrang, she was allegedly involved in her husband’s murder and hired the arrested men for the purpose.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma lauded the police for cracking the murder case. In a post on X, Chief Minister wrote, “Within 7 days, a major breakthrough has been achieved by the Meghalaya Police in the Raja murder case. 3 assailants who are from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested, a female has surrendered, and the operation is still on to catch one more assailant.”

There was surmounting pressure on Meghalaya government from Madhya Pradesh government and the Centre to resolve the case. Also, the case also raised some harsh opinions about tourist safety in the State and defamed the image of the State’s tourism industry.

As the investigation was underway, Police received a significant clue last week when Albert Pde, a tourist guide, reported that the couple was last seen walking uphill with three unknown men who were conversing in Hindi.

“The four men were walking ahead while the woman was behind. The four men were conversing in Hindi, but I could not understand what they were speaking as I know only Khasi and English,” Pde told PTI.

Meanwhile, Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, Sonam’s father, refuted Police’s claims about his daughter’s involvement in the murder and demanded CBI investigation.

“The Meghalaya police are giving false statements about my daughter because the state government’s image is getting tarnished due to Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder case,” he told reporters.
