Senior NCP Leader Baba Siddique Shot Dead in Mumbai

Mumbai, October 12: Former minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique was shot dead today in a shocking incident at his son Zishan Siddique’s office in Bandra. Siddique was fired upon by three unidentified individuals, receiving three bullet wounds. He was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Reports said two people have been taken to custody following the firing incident.

Before the news of his death emerged, it was reported that he was being given continuous cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as one of the bullets pierced into his chest.

“This is an extremely unfortunate incident and I spoke to the doctors and police. Two people have been arrested, the accused are from UP and Haryana. The third accused is absconding. We have given instructions to Mumbai Police that strict action should be taken against those who take law and order into their hands…I am sure that Mumbai police will soon arrest the third accused…Strict action will be taken against the accused…,” said Maharashtra chief minister Eknat Shinde.

Baba Siddique was a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics, known for his tenure with the Indian National Congress (INC) before joining the Ajit Pawar led NCP in 2024.

Born and raised in Mumbai, Siddique served as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Bandra West for three consecutive terms between 1999 and 2014.

Siddique gained nationwide recognition through his annual iftar parties, which brought together Bollywood stars and political leaders. A memorable moment occurred in 2013 when Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan reconciled at one of these gatherings, showcasing Siddique’s ability to unite people.

He was an important minority leader in the Bandra area of the coaster suburb of Mumbai, and was a three-time MLA from the Bandra West constituency in 1999, 2004 and 2009 consecutively. He had also served as the Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies during the 2004–2008 tenure. Besides, he has played important role such as the Municipal Corporator for two consecutive terms.

Professional hit job?

A senior journalist claimed on social media that the shooting at Baba Siddique was a a targeted professional hit, however, the Mumbai Police yet to make a comment on this. “(He) Was shot multiple times in the stomach and the head, and also attacked with a knife type object. Sidique’s killing will terrify Bollywood where he was a powerful presence publicly showcasing his relationships with all the 3 superstar Khans,” the journalist wrote on X.
