Situation Peaceful, Police Confirms After Reports Of Violence In Nagpur

Nagpur remained calm following a brief spell of unrest in the Mahal area on Monday night. Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Singal confirmed that the situation was under control after a swift response from law enforcement. The disturbance began around 8 PM when a group gathered in protest over the burning of a photo. The protest soon escalated, leading to incidents of arson and stone pelting.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Singal stated that the authorities acted immediately upon receiving complaints. “They made a request, and we took immediate action. Some individuals even visited my office, where they were informed that an FIR had been registered based on the names they provided. Necessary legal steps are being taken against the accused,” he said. Two vehicles were torched, and reports of stone pelting emerged, prompting the police to launch a combing operation to identify those responsible.

To maintain order, Section 144 was imposed, restricting public gatherings. The police urged residents to remain indoors and not believe or spread rumours. “Apart from the affected area, the entire city remains peaceful,” assured Dr. Singal. Senior officers have been closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further escalation.

Earlier, videos surfaced on social media showing vehicles engulfed in flames, with loud explosions heard in the background. While some speculated that the blasts were caused by bullets fired by the police to disperse the crowd, the exact source of the explosions remains unclear. The violence reportedly stemmed from a dispute between two groups, although the precise cause is still being investigated.

During the unrest, multiple vehicles, including two JCB machines, were set on fire, and several parked cars and motorcycles were vandalised. Firefighters were deployed to douse the flames, and one fireman sustained injuries in the process. The local administration responded with heavy police deployment, ensuring that the clashes did not spread beyond the affected area.

Several police personnel were injured while attempting to control the situation. Despite facing resistance, law enforcement managed to contain the violence swiftly. Businesses in the vicinity remained closed as a precautionary measure, and residents stayed indoors as the police worked to restore normalcy.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged the public to maintain peace and not believe in misinformation. Authorities reassured citizens that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible for the violence. Meanwhile, law enforcement continues to investigate the incident and monitor sensitive areas to prevent further unrest.
