Sonia Gandhi To File Nomination For Rajya Sabha From Rajasthan Today

Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party and Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be submitting her nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on Wednesday. The 77-year-old Sonia Gandhi, is currently serving five time as Lok Sabha MP. She was Congress president for almost 22 years between 1998 and 2022.

For the MP from Rae Bareli, this will be her first time in the Upper House. After former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi will be the second member of the Gandhi family to enter Rajya Sabha. Indira Gandhi served as a Rajya Sabha member from August 1964 to February 1967.

Sonia Gandhi will opt for the Rajya Sabha seat which will be left vacant by the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh when he concludes his six-year tenure in April. As per the reports, Sonia Gandhi”s decision to move to Rajya Sabha is due to Health reasons since she is unable to visit the constituency frequently. In 2019, Sonia Gandhi declared that it would be her final Lok Sabha election.

Her son Rahul Gandhi, daughter Priyanka Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will accompany Sonia Gandhi when she files her nomination in Jaipur, sources said. There are speculations that Priyanka Gandhi will be considered for the Rae Bareli seat to make her first electoral debut.

However, Congress is yet to announce any candidate for the biennial Rajya Sabha elections.

In April, a total of 56 members of the Upper House from 15 States are retiring and in last month, the Election Commission declared that polls to these seats will be held on February 27. The last date for filing nominations is February 15.
