"Democracy Strangulated By This Government": Sonia Gandhi Slams BJP Over The Suspension Of MPs

Wile addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Central Hall of Parliamentary, Sonia Gandhi slammed the BJP government after the suspension of 141 Members of Parliament (MPs) this week. The Congress leader said that the democracy is being the “strangulated” by the current government. The MPs were suspended following the protest demanding the Home Minister, Amit Shah on the recent security breach.

The former Congress President pointed fingers at the incumbent government for the “soaring” inflation and stated that the poor are suffering while inequalities are rising. Sonia Gandhi said, “there is a significant gap between the Prime Minister’s boasts on economic growth and ground reality.”

Sonia Gandhi also commented on the disappointing results of the recent Assembly election in which the grand old party was only able to secure power in Telangana and lost to BJP in three other states, while secured only one seat in Mizoram.

The Congress leader said, “to say that the assembly election results in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have been very disappointing for our party is an understatement”. She also said that the “disappointment” should be channelized into positivity for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

Sonia Gandhi said that though Congress is facing “enormous challenges”, she is confident that the “fortitude and resilience” will take Congress through the said challenges. “Our ideology and our values are our guiding light at this difficult time. We must never forget that our leaders fought against insurmountable odds with great courage and fortitude to give us freedom”, she said.

So far, a total of 141 MPs, 95 from Lok Sabha and 46 from Rajya Sabha were suspended from the Parliament for “disorderly conduct” in the house. This suspension of parliament members is the largest in the country’s history. With the opposition reduced to one-third of its strength in the Lok Sabha after the suspension of MPs, the government has taken up the contentious bills to replace the existing criminal laws for consideration.
