All democratic norms are being thrown into the dustbin by an autocratic Narendra Modi government by suspending 47 members of Parliament, said Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge reacting to the latest developments in Lok Sabha. Thirty-three opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) were suspended from the Lok Sabha on Monday for allegedly ‘disrupting the proceedings’. Congress leader in the House, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran are among the suspended members.
“First, intruders attacked the Parliament. Then Modi government is attacking Parliament and democracy,” Mallikarjun Kharge said in social media post.

Congress President said that all democratic principles were thrown into the dustbin when an autocratic PM Modi government suspended 47 MPs in Lok Sabha. Kharge, who is also the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, argued that Opposition is placing “two simple and genuine demands” before the government – one, Union Home Minister Amit Shah should make a statement in both Houses of Parliament on the “inexcusable breach” in the Parliament security occurred on December 13, and secondly, a detailed discussion on the concerned issue. These two demands were held by the Opposition and INDIA bloc parties since the security breach incident, to which the government have not responded so far.
“PM can give an interview to a newspaper; Home Minister can give interviews to TV channels. But, they have ZERO accountability left to the Parliament – which represents the PEOPLE OF INDIA !” Mallikarjun Kharge added.
Before concluding, Congress President said: “With an Opposition-Less Parliament, the Modi Govt can now bulldoze important pending legislations, crush any dissent, without any debate.”
Last week on Thursday, the Speaker suspended 14 Lok Sabha MPs for “disorderly conduct” in the house. The suspended MPs included TN Prathapan, Hibi Eden, Dean Kuriakose, S Jothi Mani, Ramya Haridas among others, all of them from the Opposition. They were suspended for the remainder of Winter session which will conclude on December 22.
