“Complete Purge… So That Draconian Bills Can Be Passed Without Debate”: Opposition On MPs’ Suspension

After at least 50 more Opposition members have been suspended in a ‘suspension spree’ by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Congress said the recent development will help the ruling party to pass ‘draconian bills’ without any meaningful debate.

“Today at least 50 more INDIA MPs were suspended from the Lok Sabha alone! A complete purge is being executed so that draconian Bills are passed without any meaningful debate, and so that the BJP MP who facilitated entry of the two intruders into the Lok Sabha on December 13th goes scot-free. The new Parliament reflects Namocracy in all its tyranny,” Congress leader Jairam Ramesh wrote on social media platform X.

Similarly, Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge wrote on X that “Modi-Shah have insulted the dignity of the House”. He then added that this is for the first time in history so many MPs have been suspended, and “this is like flouting democracy and is a deep insult to the dignity of the House.”

As the Winter Session continue to be eventful, at least 50 opposition MPs were suspended from the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. On Monday, 78 Parliament members were suspended from both houses of the parliament – 33 MPs from Lok Sabha and 45 MPs from Rajya Sabha – for disrupting the proceedings. Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and Karti Chidambaram, NCP leader Supriya Sule, and National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah, constitute some of the suspended MPs. In total 141 MPs so far has been suspended from both houses of the parliament.

Since the Parliament breach incident occurred on December 13, Opposition parties are urging statement from PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and demanding discussion in the Parliament. The winter session of the parliament will conclude on December 22.
