92 Opposition MPs Suspended From The Parliament So Far

A total of 78 Opposition MPs were suspended from both houses of the parliament – 33 MPs from Lok Sabha and 45 MPs from Rajya Sabha – on Monday for disrupting the proceedings. On last week, 14 MPs from Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were suspended in the Parliament for “disorderly conduct” in the house. In total, 92 Opposition leaders stand suspended.

Congress leader in the House, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran are among the suspended members in Lok Sabha. The opposition MPs were suspended for the remainder of the Winter Session. It is to be noted that suspension was imposed on 30 Lok Sabha MPs for the act of displaying placards, and the other three MPs faced suspension for breach of privilege.

Similarly, in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal, Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha moved a motion to suspend 34 members of the opposition for “misconduct” in the house; Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, K.C. Venugopal, and TMC leader Mohammed Nadimul Haq are among the suspended Rajya Sabha members. Earlier, TMC MP Derek O’Brien has been suspended from the Rajya Sabha for “ignoble misconduct.”

It was on December 14, 14 MPs were suspended for disrupting the Winter Session by demanding a statement on the recent security breach that happened in Parliament. Since December 13, the Opposition MPs have been demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the security breach in Parliament.

All democratic norms are being thrown into the dustbin by an autocratic Narendra Modi government by suspending 47 members of Parliament, said Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge reacting to the latest developments in Lok Sabha. “First, intruders attacked Parliament. Then Modi Govt attacking Parliament & Democracy,” wrote Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on his X handle on December 18.

The Congress leader also said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah should make a statement in both Houses of Parliament on the breach in Parliament security. Mallikarjun Kharge also added on his X post that a detailed discussion should be held on this matter.

“PM can give an interview to a newspaper; Home Minister can give interviews to TV channels. But, they have ZERO accountability left to the Parliament – which represents the PEOPLE OF INDIA !” added Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge also said that the central government can now “bulldoze” major pending legislations with an “opposition-less” Parliament.
