'Modi Govt Will Face People's Anger': Congress To Launch 'MGNREGA Bachao Abhiyan' Campaign
New Delhi: The Indian National Congress Party on Saturday decided to conduct a massive campaign called ‘MGNREGA Bachao Abhiyan’ from January 5, announcing the upcoming protest against the replacement of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, “MGNREGA” by the Union Government.
The MGNREGA, a flagship law brought about by the Congress-led UPA government in 2005, provides 100 days of guaranteed wage employment per year to rural households for unskilled manual labor, enhancing livelihood in Indian villages.

After the party meeting today, the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced that the party will launch a campaign against the repeal of the UPA-era rural employment legislation. The party chief also warned that people are angry and the Narendra Modi government will have to face the consequences of the move.
During the press conference after the party meeting, Kharge said the party will lead the ‘MGNREGA Bachao Abhiyan’ across the country, underlining that MGNREGA was not just a scheme, but the ‘Right to Work’ given by the Constitution and that people are angry over the repeal of MGNREGA.

The Union Government passed VB-G RAM G Bill, replacing the 20-year-old MGNREGA in parliament during the recently concluded Winter Session of Parliament amid vociferous protests by the Opposition. The VB-G RAM G Bill, touted as a replacement to the decade-old law claims to have provisions for 125 days of wage employment for rural workers.
