Odisha Woman Burns Alive 72-Year-Old Landlord She Was In Relationship With To Grab Properties

Berhampur, Odisha: Berhampur police have arrested a 57-year-old woman on charges of burning alive her 72-year-old homeowner. She had allegedly been in a relationship with the homeowner since she moved to the city and started living in the house owned by the victim.

The accused woman, Sudeshna Jena from Amrutulu village, came to the city after her husband died around six years ago, and rented the first floor of the house owned by the victim, Harihara Sahu, in the Subash Nagar area.

Harihara Sahu is a retired revenue inspector, also a widower living on the first floor of the house. The tenant and the homeowner have since then developed mental and physical relationships over the past five years.

According to the police, Sudeshna allegedly poured kerosene on Harihara while he was asleep and then set him on fire. Though he was immediately rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for emergency treatment, his condition deteriorated and succumbed to severe burns.

The woman also attempted to destroy evidence by discarding Harihara’s mobile phone into a well in the courtyard and also burnt the kerosene container.

According to the police, differences reportedly arose between Sudeshna and Harihara after Harihara allegedly prevented Sudeshna from visiting her daughter in Hyderabad and coerced her into meeting his demands, The New Indian Express reported, citing the SP.

Sudeshna is also reported to have harbored intentions of taking over Harihara’s properties and other assets as a motive for her action. However, police.

Ght when the victim’s daughter, Madhusmita Sahu, reached the hospital, her father was undergoing treatment. Madhusmita then learned the shocking details from her father before his passing.

Police began an investigation after Madhusmita Sahu, who stays in another part of the city, filed a complaint. An FIR has been registered under number 259/25. Though initially denied, Sudeshna confessed to committing the crime alone later.

Police suspect the involvement of other people in the incident, and an investigation is underway.
