Kochi, Kerala: Appalling details are emerging after police arrested a 36-year-old woman, Sandhya, on suspicion of murdering her four-year-old daughter, Kalyani, by throwing her into a river from a bridge in Kerala’s Ernakulam district. The deeply disturbing turn emerged during the toddler’s postmortem, which revealed that the baby had been raped multiple times.

Horrifyingly, the child had also been sexual assaulted, even a day before her death. The forensic surgeon has reportedly stated that there were bleeding and wounds in the girl’s private parts.

Exposing the horror further, the suspected perpetrator behind the heinous act is the victim’s paternal uncle (father’s brother). Police arrested the family member and registered a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) case against him.

The victim’s mother, Sandhya, was taken into custody after confessing to killing her daughter. According to the police, Sandhya took Kalyani from an Anganwadi in the Puthencruz–Mattakuzhy area on Monday evening, and brought her to her residence in Kurumassery in Chengamanad.

Though Sandhya initially gave conflicting statements to family members regarding Kalyani’s whereabouts, Police, with the help of CCTV footage and eyewitnesses, found the mother’s involvement in the child’s absence. Police discovered the child’s body on Tuesday after an extensive search operation. Later, Sandhya admitted to the police that she had thrown the child into the river from the Moozhikulam bridge, about 5 km from her residence and on the way from her husband’s house.
