In Makhnaha village, Darbhanga district, Bihar, a celebratory mood quickly turned into a tragedy as 22-year-old videographer died after being shot in the mouth during a birthday party shoot on late Wednesday night.

The victim has been identified as Sushil Kumar Sahini, a resident of Makhnaha village. The videographer was hired by a fellow villager, Rakesh Sahni, to film his daughter’s birthday celebrations. When Sushil’s camera battery suddenly died, the enraged father verbally abused Sushil, leading to a heated confrontation between the two.

In a fit of rage, the accused, Rakesh Sahini, shot the videographer in the mouth. Rakesh and his friends rushed Sushil to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) but fled after abandoning him at the entrance. The hospital staff rushed Sushil for treatment, however, the 22-year-old succumbed to his injuries in the emergency room.

The incident led to villagers blocking traffic on Laheriasarai Road in protest, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. Traffic came to a standstill for several hours, causing a traffic jam for one kilometre on both sides of the road. The situation was defused by the timely intervention of Benipur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sumit Kumar, who assured the protesting villagers.

“Father of the deceased has lodged an FIR against Rakesh, who is absconding after the incident. Preliminary investigation revealed that Rakesh is also involved in illegal liquor trade. We have detained three persons for interrogation in this connection, and raids are being conducted to nab the accused,” the SDPO said, according to reports.
